Wallpapering a room can transform your living space, but getting the calculations wrong can be costly and frustrating. Our wallpaper calculator takes into account windows, doors, and any possible waste, so you will know exactly how many rolls of wallpaper you will need to get the job done!
How to Use a Wallpaper Calculator
Start by measuring the height and width of your walls. When you measure for height, go from floor to ceiling. When you measure for width, go from corner to corner. If your walls or ceilings aren’t straight or flat, divide them into rectangular pieces for the best results.
The calculator allows you to add multiple walls, so you can account for the entire room or even multiple rooms if you’re planning a larger project.
Accounting for Windows and Doors
The calculator subtracts wallpaper-free areas. Enter the number of standard and double doors to ensure the calculator subtracts the right number of areas. Standard doors are 1.5 square meters and double doors 3 square meters.
Our calculator allows you to include different sized windows. When accounting for windows, you will need to know their actual dimensions. You will need to measure the height and width of each window.
Using the 10% Waste Option
Even though experienced decorators may not need as much extra material, we suggest that you leave the “waste” setting on, especially if this is your first time wallpapering or working with patterned wallpaper.
We offer a 10% waste option because wallpapering usually needs extra material for things like:
- pattern matching
- mistakes made while hanging
- uneven cuts around doors and windows
- damage during installation
- future touch-ups or repairs
How to Understand the Wallpaper Calculator Results
Our wallpaper roll calculations are based on common UK, EU, and US roll sizes of around 5.2 – 5.3 square meters per roll. The calculator calculates the total square meters and the number of wallpaper rolls necessary for the job.
Important Considerations When Using Wallpaper
Different wallpaper patterns require varying amounts of extra material. Large patterns could need more paper for pattern matching, whereas solid colors or little patterns often require less. Some geometric patterns may require careful preparation to align properly.
The calculator assumes typical room heights and wall shapes. You might need to add a little more to the amount you estimated if the building has unusual features like sloped ceilings or alcoves.
How to Get Accurate Wall Measurements
If you want accurate measurements, you must measure each room twice. When measuring your walls always use a metal tape measure. Fabric tape measures can stretch and give inaccurate readings. When measuring windows and doors, include their frames if you won’t be wallpapering up to the glass or door edge.
When to Seek Professional Advice
Even though our calculator gives you good estimates, you should talk to a professional decorator if you’re working with expensive wallpaper or rooms that are especially hard to decorate. They can tell you what you need to do to make your chosen wallpaper pattern and room layout work.
Roll sizes for different wallpaper brands may be a little different. Even though our tool uses standard measurements, you might want to check how much your wallpaper rolls out and make the necessary changes. It’s better to have a little too much than too little when you’re not sure. You can always save extra wallpaper in case you need to fix something or touch it up later.
Once you know how many rolls of wallpaper you need for your project you should buy them all at the same time. This makes sure that all of your rolls are from the same batch, so the colors won’t change. As you buy the rolls. you should also make sure that the pattern number and batch number on each roll match.
Wallpaper can be expensive, so taking the time to correctly estimate how much you will need will help you avoid mistakes that cost a lot or frustrating shortages in the middle of a project. Our calculator helps you make sure you have enough materials to finish your job without spending too much or wasting too much.
